  1. California Closets is an American brand. It was founded in Woodland Hills, California in 1978 and is headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona. Since 1998 it has been owned by FirstService Corporation of Toronto, and its Canadian operation describes itself as Canadian owned and operated, through ten locations, four franchised and one company-owned.
  2. Closets by Design is an American brand, franchised from Home Organizers Inc. of California and founded in Los Angeles in 1982. The Toronto location is a local franchisee.
  3. IKEA was founded in Sweden in 1943 and is owned today by the Ingka Group and Inter IKEA Systems of the Netherlands and Sweden. PAX wardrobes come in fixed widths. PAX and KOMPLEMENT carry a ten-year limited warranty, not transferable in Canada outside Saskatchewan. Wardrobe planning is free online or in store; the in-home service is for kitchens and costs $129. Assembly is booked through TaskRabbit, a partner.
  4. California Closets' site says each design is sent to one of their local manufacturing centres in the home province, that installers are their own employees, that the warranty is a limited lifetime warranty for as long as you own the home, and it publishes four price levels from about $175 to $1,800 and up per linear foot, all-inclusive.
  5. Closets by Design's warranty covers units manufactured and installed by its employees. It is lifetime on units they manufacture, one year on items they install but do not make, such as mirrored doors, and it is not transferable. The Toronto site does not say where units are built.
  6. The Closets by Design Toronto site publishes no prices. On 26 September 2026 it showed 40% + 15% off plus free installation, with a 30 September 2026 expiry.
  7. Independent shops vary. Many are excellent. Many do not put a warranty in writing, use hired installers, and ask for a deposit before drawing anything. Ask.
  8. We do not have a showroom you can walk through. The designer brings the samples to your kitchen table.

In fairness

Where each one is the better choice

California Closets

Ten showrooms, the widest catalogue of accessories and lighting on this page, and four published price tiers. If you want to walk through finished displays before you decide, they have the most to walk through.

Closets by Design

Locations across the country and a promotion running most months. If their sale price beats the quotes you already have, get it in writing and compare the total for the same drawing.

IKEA

The cheapest way to get a wardrobe with doors, and a free planner you can use at midnight. If your wall is a multiple of 50 centimetres and you are handy with an Allen key, PAX is hard to beat on price.

Local cabinet shop

A good cabinetmaker can beat all of us on price for a simple job and match anyone on quality. The risk is what happens after the install, so ask the four questions below before you sign.

Dream Spaces

You see the price range before you book. One company designs, builds and installs, and the warranty is answered by the people who built it. We don't have a showroom to walk through, and we don't run sales. That is the trade.

Before you sign anything

Four questions to ask every company that quotes you

Our designers ask you to put these to us too. The answers are what you are actually buying.

1

Who builds it, and in what building?

A closet is a set of cabinets. Somebody cuts the panels, edges them and drills them. Ask for the address. Ours is 73 Saunders Rd, Barrie.

2

Who honours the warranty in ten years?

Most companies on this page offer a lifetime warranty. Ask whether it is held by the company that built the closet, or by whoever holds the local licence at the time you need it.

3

What is the price without the discount?

If a quote shows a percentage off, ask for the number it was taken from and when that number was last charged. Then compare totals, on the same drawing.

4

Who installs it, employees or subcontractors?

The crew in your bedroom decides how the closet is fastened to the wall and how the house is left. Ask whether they are on payroll and who you call if a drawer sticks.

The Homeowners Lifetime Warranty

When the same company designs, builds and installs, there is nobody to point at

No dealer, no factory, no installer blaming each other. Hinges, drawer slides, toe kicks and manufacturing defects are covered through normal household use, for as long as you own the home. Water damage and mistreatment are not.

What is standard, not an upgrade

  • Undermount soft-close drawer slides on everything we build
  • Three-quarter-inch box construction and metal drawer boxes
  • Built to size around vents, bulkheads and sloped ceilings, at no extra charge
  • Most installs finished in one day by a two-person crew, with full cleanup
  • A follow-up call 30 days after the install

Transparent pricing

What a Dream Spaces closet costs, before you book

These are quoted ranges before any discount, for closets we have built and photographed. The same closet can be $4,000 or $40,000 depending on how much paint and how many drawers you put on it, so every quote splits into the foundation and what you added on top. The full ladder, the calculator and the photos are on the closet cost page.

California Closets publishes per-foot pricing that starts below ours and ends above it. Closets by Design publishes nothing. So the only fair comparison is quote against quote on the same drawing. Send us theirs and we will price the same layout.

Reach-in closet$2,500 to $6,000
Walk-in, the build most people buy$4,000 to $10,000
Large walk-in or dressing room$10,000 to $20,000
Painted, full custom$20,000 to $40,000+

Questions people ask when comparing

Straight answers

Is Dream Spaces cheaper than California Closets or Closets by Design?

Sometimes. Our walk-ins run $4,000 to $10,000 before paint and extras. California Closets publishes per-foot pricing that starts lower and ends higher than ours, and Closets by Design publishes no pricing, so the honest answer is that it depends on the drawing. Bring us a competitor's quote and we will price the same layout so you can compare totals.

Is Dream Spaces a franchise?

No. Todd and Trish own it and run it from the workshop at 73 Saunders Rd in Barrie. The designer who measures your closet works for them, and so does the crew that installs it.

Do you match competitor discounts?

We don't run percentage-off sales, so there is nothing to match against. We quote one price. If a competitor's sale price beats it on the same design, that is a real comparison and we would rather you had both numbers in writing.

Is California Closets a Canadian company?

It is an American brand with a Canadian parent. California Closets was founded in California in 1978 and is headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona. FirstService Corporation of Toronto has owned it since 1998, and the Canadian operation calls itself Canadian owned and operated. Closets by Design is franchised from Home Organizers Inc. in California. Dream Spaces is owned by two people in Barrie.

Is IKEA PAX a fair comparison to a custom closet?

For a wall that fits its fixed widths, PAX is the cheapest wardrobe on this page and a lot of people are happy with it. It is not built to your wall, it carries a ten-year warranty rather than a lifetime one, and assembly is booked through a partner. If your closet has a bulkhead, a sloped ceiling or an odd width, that is where custom starts to earn its price.

Where do you install?

Roughly two hours from Toronto: Barrie and Simcoe County, York Region, the GTA, Muskoka and cottage country. Farther than that, ask. We have driven a long way for the right project.
